Roy-Hart schools safe, study says

MIDDLEPORT — There is no imminent threat to students and staff at any of the Royalton-Hartland schools in Middleport due to FMC.

That is according to a letter sent to the district from the New York state Department of Health and received Wednesday afternoon following a set of March tests. The agency was seeking to determine whether volatile chemicals found in groundwater beneath the school were causing harmful vapors to seep through the ground and into the school, a process known as "soil vapor intrusion."

The chemical the wells tested positive for, Tricloroethene (TCE), is handled at the FMC chemical plant, seated a few hundred yards behind the high and middle schools in the Village of Middleport. It was found in wells dug on school property and in "low levels" in some crawl spaces, but not in any classrooms, according to the report.
