New lease on life for Fisherville MillBy Donna Boynton Worcester Telegram (MA) June 18, 2006 GRAFTON - The remains of the Fisherville Mill - a heap of charred metal and brick on oil- and asbestos-contaminated soil - have endured seven years after the mill complex was destroyed by arsonists. But the fire, however devastating, has been the impetus for opportunity and discovery. The cleanup efforts, spearheaded by new owner Eugene N. Bernat, one of four partners of Fisherville Mill Redevelopment Co., have yielded more than debris — they have unearthed significant pieces of South Grafton and Blackstone Valley history. Large turbines and gates — remnants of the Blackstone Canal — a stone arch bridge and other structures once hidden by the sprawling mill, are now the focal point of preservation efforts by local historians. The former Superfund waste site, now classified as a brownfield site, will eventually host a new mill-style building — this time not for manufacturing, but for retail shops, restaurants and residential units.
