Group says mayor swayed by politics in Keith reviewBy Jack Spillane New Bedford Standard-Times (MA) July 30, 2006 NEW BEDFORD - For five years, a disparate group of New Bedford residents have been the canaries in the coal mine on the Keith Middle School project. They've called themselves Wasted Away, after a line in the Jimmy Buffett pop song "Margaritaville." Wasted Away, more than any other force in the city, refused to accept the municipal government's wisdom that building a new middle school on a former PCB dump was a good idea. As the level of PCB contamination at the Hathaway Road site was found to be greater than expected and as the cost of the project ballooned, the group pushed the Kalisz administration and the School Department to make the construction process public and defend the now $69 million project. ...
