DEP to review sites after day-care fiasco Child center was at former thermometer facility BY STEVE CHAMBERS NEWARK STAR-LEDGER (NJ) August 12, 2006 State environmental officials will inspect 1,846 sites previously removed from a list of contaminated properties, following a scandal in which one still-polluted site was converted into a day-care center. Children had been attending school at the former thermometer factory in Gloucester County for two years when tests revealed dangerous levels of mercury in the air. Kiddie Kollege in Franklin Township was shuttered two weeks ago after tests by the state Department of Environmental Protection. A lawyer for a dozen families who had 3- and 4-year-olds at the center said yesterday some children were testing at levels double what was considered safe for adults. Mercury can harm the ner vous system of young children, making them less able to think and learn. ...
