Oil cleanup at Ossining riverfront site to delay luxury condos

OSSINING ? A recently discovered pool of oil and contaminated soil at the
site where luxury condos were set to rise on the waterfront is likely to
cause cleanup costs of more than $1 million and delay the long-awaited
construction.

The oily mess surfaced after demolition was completed last month on
buildings used by the old Maue Oil Co., which operated there for decades,
and developers of the site are now seeking funds from a state program to
clean up the spill.

"We found pipes leading to the tanks still had oil in them," said Joseph
Apicella, a development executive for Cappelli Enterprises who is working
on the Harbor Square project, which calls for 150 residential units and
10,000 square feet of retail space. "Somehow that site was not remediated."
