Groundwater plume from Nyanza still sends vapors into homesBy Jon Brodkin Metrowest Daily News (MA) August 24, 2006 ASHLAND -- The defunct Nyanza dye factory poses a cancer risk to residents in dozens of homes today, 28 years after the factory closed, because a half-mile long plume of contaminated groundwater is sending vapor into their basements, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday. The agency is offering to install systems that stop harmful gases from entering buildings in about 45 homes and five commercial buildings near the Superfund site. A new EPA risk assessment found that people who breathe air contaminated by vapors from Nyanza for 30 years have an increased risk of developing cancer. The danger is primarily from trichloroethene (TCE), which can cause nerve, kidney and liver damage and liver or lung cancer, according to the EPA. ...
