Cleanup of former Nassau Smelting site to begin Contaminated soil will be encased in an unbreakable plastic liner during the year-long project
The lead, copper and zinc that contaminate the soil beneath the former Nassau Smelting and Refinery site in Richmond Valley have prevented the property from being used for anything. The toxins, which have festered for decades, were discovered after several buildings on the site there were demolished 20 years ago. But after years of neglect, a new day is dawning on the 46-acre eyesore at the foot of the Arthur Kill. A cleanup program, funded by Nassau's corporate predecessor Lucent Technologies, is scheduled to begin at the state brownfield site this week and could last up to a year. ...
