Brownfield sites discussed in Salem CityBy ROBERT LINNEHAN Salem Sunbeam (NJ) November 3, 2006 SALEM - The Salem City Environmental Commission met this week to discuss the formation of an open space plan for the city and an inventory project for Salem's brownfield and open space areas. Representatives from the city council and the commission met in early March to discuss the merits of applying for a Brownfield Designation Area for several parts of Salem. A BDA is an under-utilized, often abandoned industrial or commercial property that is either contaminated with industrial waste or has the stigma of suspected contamination, which discourages revitalization or redevelopment. If Salem applies for a BDA application from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the city could possibly receive grant money to determine how contaminated the areas actually are and funds for cleanup as well. ...
