State sets new limits for toxic TCE vapor levelsBy Jennie Daley Ithaca Journal (NY) November 6, 2006 ITHACA - Following months of review, the New York State Department of Health released its new guidelines for indoor air levels of a toxic industrial chemical that has been detected in South Hill homes. The guidelines, posted Oct. 18, dictate how the state responds — or requires responsible parties to respond — when trichloroethylene is found in soil and indoor air. Trichloroethylene, more commonly referred to as TCE, was used to degrease metal parts at the former Morse Chain site now owned by Emerson Power Transmission. Considered a likely human carcinogen, the chemical has been detected in the indoor air of homes downhill from the South Hill factory. It is believed that the majority of solvent traveled off the property via groundwater contaminated by a leaking firewater reservoir that contained TCE-polluted water. ...
