City leaders rebuff one of their own

Commissioners deny Kirk Valentine’s request for an incentive to build apartments in the city.

ADRIAN — In what board members called a "difficult" and "uncomfortable" scenario, the Adrian City Commission voted Monday to deny an economic development incentive to one of its own members.

Commissioner Kirk Valentine, a partner in Collegeview LLC, did not vote or take part in commission deliberations on the issue. Collegeview LLC had sought a $31,000 reimbursement from the city’s brownfield authority to help Valentine and his brother build an 11-unit apartment building at 943 W. Maumee St., the site of a recently demolished funeral home. The plan has met stiff public opposition from neighbors.
