New plan unveiled for old Challenge shopBY MARK BROOKY Grand Haven Tribune (MI) November 21, 2006 A century-old factory on Grand Haven's east side is being positioned for a major facelift in the next few years. The head of a firm that owns the former Challenge Machinery Co. property on the northwest corner of Fulton Avenue and Beechtree Street said he plans to tear down parts of the 216,000-square-foot factory and turn the site into a multiple-use campus consisting of small industrial, commercial and office space — and possibly some residential condominiums at a later date. ... The site will require an estimated $3.9 million in preparation work, Oleszczuk said, because of extensive contamination from its former heavy industrial use. That work will include environmental cleanup, building demolition, lead and asbestos abatement, and infrastructure improvements. ...
