Toxic school site up for Council approvalby Patrick Arden Metro New York December 5, 2006 SOUTH BRONX - The city has fast tracked a plan to build four new schools on contaminated land in Mott Haven, despite community health concerns. The seven-acre site at E. 153rd Street and Concourse Village West has hosted a railyard, a laundry, a service station and a manufactured gas plant, leaving behind mercury and other harmful toxins. The city allocated $30 million for the clean- up, which involves soil removal, among other remedies. An alarm was sounded in September by parents and teachers at P.S. 156, a school built on stilts next to the site. ...
