Senate OKs regulation changes to school sites , By Martin C. Bricketto Gloucester County Times (NJ) December 5, 2006 TRENTON - New regulations intended to prevent a sequel to the Franklin Township day care center allowed to open in a former thermometer factory were approved by the full state Senate on Monday. Youngsters at the Kiddie Kollege were exposed to mercury before state regulators closed the center in July. An investigation has been launched into the matter by the state Attorney General's Office, and lapses by both state and local governments have been cited by lawmakers reacting to the debacle. The approval of the bill, sponsored by state senators Fred Madden, D-4 of Gloucester, and Stephen Sweeney, D-3 of West Deptford, came despite protests from environmental groups that it could have been stronger. Those advocates wanted the measure's testing requirements for day care centers and schools to include residential projects as well.
