MERCED, Calif. (AP) - Construction of an eco-friendly hotel planned as the centerpiece of a downtown revitalization effort was postponed until spring after toxic vapors from a former gas station were discovered on the site. City engineers discovered the vapors in contaminated soil earlier this year. The level of toxins is high enough to require an ongoing cleanup but does not pose a health hazard, said Daniel Ainslie, Merced's development coordinator The construction site sits across from the Civic Center and a gas station operated there about 30 years ago, Ainslie said. ...
