[I'm not sure the reporter got it right, but 140 micrograms per cubic
meter doesn't seem like a protective standard for air inside an
elementary school! - LS] Vapors Under school to go EPA taking action. Levels not high enough to cause cancer. Degreasing agent seen as hazardous by agency.
FRANKLIN TWP. - The federal Environmental Protection Agency is planning to vent trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors from under a township elementary school and other area residences, according to documents filed with the Warren County Health Department. No exact timetable has been released for the work to begin. The industrial solvent traditionally used as a degreasing agent is considered a hazardous substance by the environmental agency. The school lies within the area of the Pohatcong Valley Groundwater Contamination Superfund Site. Air samples taken within the school revealed concentrations of TCE that were not elevated, according to an EPA report released in August. ...
