Work On Commercial Area Of Douglas Park UnderwayBy Kurt Helin Gazette Newspaper (Long Beach, CA) December 14, 2006 Crews are working on Lakewood Boulevard near the Long Beach Airport and behind the fence on part of Boeing’s property as Douglas Park gets underway. Already 27 acres of future office space is in escrow to a developer and crews are hard at work to put in the infrastructure, said Stephane Wandel, the project manager for Douglas Park. Douglas Park is a mixed-use development planned for the 261-acre former Boeing property west of Lakewood Boulevard next to the Long Beach Airport. Already approved plans for the property call for 3.3 million square feet of commercial space, primarily office and light industrial, a hotel and 200,000 square feet of retail space. There also will be 11 acres of parks and the residential component. ... Then in May, Boeing officials said in a statement that all the housing would be town homes and condominiums. According to those officials changes were made because of concerns about contamination of the soil — the standards for how clean the soil must be under a single-family home are stricter than those for town homes and condominiums. The site had been a McDonell-Douglas manufacturing area and there is soil contamination that must be dealt with, according to the environmental work. ...
