Tar Creek: Decision Due: School district's fate up to voters The Picher-Cardin district in the abandoned mining site could be annexed to nearby schools. By ANGEL RIGGS Tulsa World (OK) December 14, 2006 OKLAHOMA CITY -- Picher and Cardin voters will decide in February whether to close the communities' consolidated school, which sits in Picher amid the abandoned Tar Creek mining district considered one of the nation's most contaminated areas. State Superintendent Sandy Garrett on Wednesday called for the election -- set for Feb. 13 -- in which voters will decide whether to annex the district to nearby Commerce and Quapaw districts.
