Advocates optimistic Congress will fund brownfields programRaju Chebium Gannett News Service Lafayette Daily Advertiser (LA) December 17, 2006 Local politicians from around the country will be knocking on the doors of Congress when Democrats take over next month, asking for more money to clean up thousands of polluted properties in cities and towns nationwide. These eyesores - former gas stations, dry cleaning shops, factories and waste dumps - are called brownfields. States began cleaning them up in the mid-1990s using public money and tax incentives. There are between 450,000 and 1 million sites awaiting cleanup so communities can reuse them for new homes, shopping malls and schools.
