Arsenic-tainted land OK'd Seminole to put schools in Midway neighborhood Dave Weber Orlando Sentinel (FL) January 20, 2007SANFORD -- State environmental officials have given the go-ahead for two schools to be built on arsenic-tainted farmland east of Sanford, but they won't guarantee that the site is safe for children. They say removal of contaminated soil found through spot tests of the property in the planned Cameron Heights subdivision off State Road 46, plus a prohibition on use of groundwater on half of the land, should provide adequate safeguards. "But if you want 100 percent assurance, no," said Tom Lubozynski, an administrator with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in Orlando. Lubozynski said it would be too costly and impractical to thoroughly test for arsenic or other pesticides used on so large a piece of land for the 100 years when celery, cabbage and other crops were grown. ...
