Group says state Brownfield Opportunity Area program failing BY JESSICA M. PASKOP Associated Press Newsday (NY) January 24, 2007ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A community renewal group said Wednesday that a state program designed to redevelop old, polluted industrial sites in poor neighborhoods has failed, leaving residents frustrated. The Brownfield Opportunity Area program, created in 2003 with the passage of the Brownfield Law, is aimed at revitalizing contaminated industrial sites to create usable property in economically distressed areas. Through government funding, low-income communities are able to reclaim the former industrial sites and combat urban decay, while also allowing current residents to remain and attracting new residents. A report released Wednesday by members of New Partners for Community Revitalization claims that the state has failed to get the program up and running, more than three years since its creation. The New York City-based organization works to revitalize low-income communities in the metropolitan area through reclaiming brownfields. ...
