Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Western MA area-wide site assessment grant |
The Republican, West Springfield, MA 2/05/07 By Holly Angelo A $200,000 federal grant is helping the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission identify brownfield sites with petroleum-based contamination in the hill towns. The Hilltown Community Development Corporation is working with the commission to identify sites with known or perceived petroleum-based contamination. A brownfield is a property whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. "The goal is to really see if there are town-owned or privately-owned parcels of land that are contaminated or are suspected of being contaminated," said Andrew Baker, executive director of the Hilltown Community Development Corporation based in Chesterfield, on Friday. "I think it's a great opportunity for communities to have the capacity to either stop continuing contamination and have the possibility of restoring sites to some useful purpose." He said there are not many brownfield sites in the hill towns, but there are some. The hill towns include Blandford, Chester, Chesterfield, Cummington, Goshen, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery, Plainfield, Russell, Westhampton, Williamsburg, and Worthington.
