Tainted soil, water near middle school Metals company ordered to submit cleanup plan by June 1 By Dan Stockman Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (IN) April 29, 2007A metal coatings company has known for two years that dangerous chemicals have polluted soil and groundwater 200 feet from Memorial Park Middle School grounds but has not started a cleanup. Wayne Metal Protection discovered a plume of tetrachloroethylene in the soil and groundwater beneath its facility at 1511 Wabash Ave., in September 2004 and reported the pollution to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Later investigations by the company found other pollutants either on or around the site, including trichloroethylene, cyanide, arsenic, lead and chromium, according to IDEM documents. ...But Corey Webb, IDEM's project manager for the cleanup, said as far as the agency knows, the extent of the plume is unknown because the company has not sent in its plan. IDEM officials fear the chemical vapors could be coming out of the ground and into homes and classrooms. "If offsite impacts are such that would pose an immediate threat to human health or the environment, action should be taken immediately," the agency wrote in an April 2006 letter to the company notifying it the deadline had passed to submit a cleanup plan and giving it another 60 days to submit one. "The possibility of vapor intrusion should be specifically addressed if site conditions indicate contaminant migration towards the school and/or homes." ...
