Work to start on tannery redevelopment By Eric Gaertner Muskegon Chronicle (MI) May 9, 2007The preliminary preparation work for redevelopment of the former Whitehall Leather Co. tannery site into a condominium community is back on again. The first major physical work to the buildings on the former industrial site was officially on hold because of the moratorium Gov. Jennifer Granholm recently imposed on all state grants, including $1.2 million for the tannery project. The moratorium is in response to the state's budget crisis. Based on an exemption for the project and the city's willingness to delay receiving the grant money until the 2007-08 state fiscal year, the tannery project is ready to begin. The 33-acre site along White Lake was contaminated by more than a century of leather-tanning operations. A group of developers, which took ownership of the site in November, has proposed a 200-unit condominium community. ...
