Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Pittsburgh area plans to create 128 mile riverfront park |
128-mile county riverfront park planned Pittsburgh Tribune Zandy Dudiak Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Allegheny County is poised to have what officials have called the longest urban linear park in the world, touching more than half of the county's 130 municipalities with the City of Pittsburgh at its center....While recreation may be the reason, economic development is just as much a motivating factor for creating a 128-mile riverfront park along the banks of the county's four waterways -- the Allegheny, Monongahela, Ohio and Youghiogheny rivers. ...The county has begun to apply for grants from principal funding sources, including Allegheny Regional Asset District and private foundations as well as state and federal programs for brownfields and economic development, Fawcett (R-at large) said. He said "next to none" of the money used to develop the park will come from the county. Many brownfields are still undeveloped nearly three decades after the demise of the steel industry, including the Edgewater Steel property in Oakmont, where Fawcett lives. He said it is important to have a comprehensive plan for riverfront development in place "before the window of opportunity closes" on the park concept.
