Building up the city Dunkirk, NY By GIB SNYDER OBSERVER City Editor 5/27/2007 - A newly formed committee is working hard to bring some old industrial dilapidated buildings in Dunkirk some new life. This past week 13 members of the local steering committee of the Brownfield Opportunity Areas program took a tour of three brownfield sites located in the city. ...The group viewed the three areas of concern on the former Al Tech Steel Co. site, now owned by RealCo Inc., before proceeding to the Central Avenue site of the future Fredonia State University high technology incubator. A visit to the former Roblin Steel Co. site rounded out the tour. ...Both Chautauqua County and the city play a role in the sites' cleanup and redevelopment. The Al Tech sites are under the city's purview while the Roblin site, which will eventually include both the former Alumax plant and the Edgewood Warehouse, is under the county's supervision. ...Cooperation has been the key so far in getting things done to prepare for the future use of the sites in the city. What that future use will be is the charge for the BOA committee.
