Board mulls contaminated site

Woodbridge weighing redevelopment

WOODBRIDGE — Even as contamination from the former General Dynamics site 
in Avenel appears to have migrated to the neighboring Fifth District 
Park, the property's owner and the township have begun the slow process 
of redeveloping the property.

On Tuesday, the Township Council approved a resolution directing the 
Planning Board to study whether the site — located at 150 Avenel St. — 
should be named an area in need of redevelopment. If the township 
ultimately designates the area as a redevelopment zone, it could better 
shape the outline of what can and can't be built there.

"We want a use that's going to get the highest level of cleanup with the 
least possible traffic," Mayor John McCormac said. "Right now that 
appears to be some kind of residential development with a small retail 
component."

McCormac said the township will insist on a cleanup that brings the 
property to within state regulations for unrestricted development, a 
higher bar than those required to meet for industrial or commercial 
development.
