Ford to clean house before land is sold

Eight decades of polluted ground needs to be cleaned up, and that will be a factor in determining the price of the property, its risks and how it can be used in the future.

In early 1942, the Ford Motor Co. built a huge oval dirt track on its Highland Park property to test military vehicles it was building for use in World War II. To control the dust, workers sprayed the track with waste oil, a common practice for unpaved roads.

The track disappeared beneath new buildings and parking lots by 1974. But it's one of dozens of sites on the 138-acre property that need to be investigated and possibly cleaned up, according to a company report being reviewed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Ford has decided to close the plant in 2008, so the environmental cleanup will help determine the property's sale price, risks for possible developers and the potential uses of the land.
