Target a brownfield success story Patricia Villers New Haven Register (CT) August 8, 2007ANSONIA - Elected officials and Target shoppers alike applauded Tuesday outside the new store as Gov. M. Jodi Rell ceremonially signed into law a bill that assists developers in brownfield site cleanup. Rell already had signed the actual bill, "An Act Implementing the Recommendations of the Brownfields Task Force," which went into effect July 1. "This law expands the state's capacity to clean up and redevelop contaminated property," Rell said. "This law epitomizes smart or responsible growth. It is the foundation of our anti-sprawl efforts. It makes far more economic and environmental sense to clean up and reuse an old factory site or old store than to lose acres of virgin farmland or open space to development." Rell said cleaning up contaminated sites is also a quality-of-life consideration. The new Target store opened last week on a redeveloped 10-acre parcel on West Main Street, at the former site of Latex Foam Products Co., which was destroyed by a May 2001 fire. ...
