State finds satisfactorily low TCE levels at South Hill Some parents want more testing at the elementary school By Krisy Gashler Ithaca Journal (NY) September 6, 2007ITHACA - Testing at South Hill Elementary School found "low levels” of TCE and other volatile organic compounds that the state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation say require no further investigation. In a letter from the Department of Health to the Ithaca City School District sent Wednesday, the Department of Health asserted that "the low levels of VOCs detected in the samples collected from beneath the school do not indicate levels of contamination requiring further investigation." Some parents at the school disagree, however, and insist that further testing of classroom air is necessary to safeguard the health of the children, teachers and staff at the school. "The cost of testing and finding nothing is trivial compared to the cost of not testing and missing something," said Rich DePaolo, whose daughter is in third grade at South Hill. DePaolo is the parent who requested the testing that has just been completed. ...
