Search for TCE contamination widens

Contractors for the state will use hydraulic and drilling equipment to 
probe the ground in northern parts of the Town of Union in coming weeks, 
widening the search for the kind of industrial solvents that have raised 
public health threats elsewhere in the Southern Tier.

Scientists armed with a "geo-probe" rig will work their way along 
sidewalks and public right of ways to collect groundwater and soil vapor 
samples, according to information from the Department of Environmental 
Conservation.

The general boundaries of the area to be tested extend as far north as 
Twist Run Road, south to the Susquehanna River, east to the intersection 
of Watson Boulevard and Country Club Road, and west to Prescott Avenue, 
according to a letter from Sally Dewes, a DEC engineer. Occupants of 
about 530 area residences have received notice of the new probe.
