Smith Indianapolis Star (IN) September 8, 2007PLAINFIELD -- Plainfield officials hope to turn the old Shouse Landfill from an eyesore and environmental hazard into a community jewel. The question is whether it's safe to turn the mountain of trash buried along the banks of White Lick Creek into a bark park for dog owners, walking and jogging trails, or maybe, a golf skills course for chipping and putting. A detailed investigation of the 13.6-acre site at Vestal Road and Pike Lane is under way. The study will help determine whether the trash pile can be encapsulated and made safe for recreation. "So far, the indications are that it was just household trash, but we can't be sure until all the testing is done," said Town Engineer Tim Belcher. At least one former landfill worker has walked over the site with engineers to try to show where, he claims, industrial wastes were dumped. ...
