School built on toxic chemical site - pols BY JOHN LAUINGER NEW YORK DAILY NEWS September 21, 2007Two Queens councilmen blasted the city's Education Department yesterday for failing to inform the community that the new Information Technology High School in Long Island City sits atop a toxic chemical plume. Councilmen James Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows) and Eric Gioia (D-Sunnyside) said the city never told the public that the school, which opened in 2003, occupies a former metal-plating warehouse contaminated with lead and petrochemicals. "When it comes to the health and safety of our children, never, ever can we cut any corners," Gioia said at a news conference outside the school. He and Gennaro found out about the plume after seeing a recent televised investigative report on it. The city exploited a loophole to duck public scrutiny of the project, they said. Had the school been built by the city on city-owned land, a public review would have been mandatory. ...
