Petroleum-Brownfields Report

The Northeast-Midwest Institute and the National Brownfields Coalition are producing a series of reports that focus on the issues and opportunities presented by the need to reauthorize the EPA Brownfields Program. The first completed issue brief, Petroleum/UST Brownfields Cleanups, addresses the petroleum-brownfields program. The report recommends several revisions to clarify and broaden site eligibility, and the establishment of greater grantee flexibility in the use of funds on petroleum and non-petroleum sites. See

Brownfields Tax Credit Proposed

Representatives Michael Turner (R-OH) and Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) are co-sponsoring a bill to establish a brownfields tax credit. HR 3080 would establish an income tax credit for up to 50 percent of qualified remediation expenditures. There would be a $1 billion cap on the program, and credits would be distributed to states proportionately according to population. Report Ties Progress on Climate Change to Smart Growth

A report released by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) documents that compact urban development, as an alternative to sprawl, could reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) by 30 percent -- a 7 to 12 percent reduction in driving-related greenhouse gases. The report was jointly authored by Smart Growth America (SGA), the Center for Clean Air Policy, and the National Center for Smart Growth. Northeast-Midwest staff participates on the SGA Smart Growth and Climate Change work group. See
