Officials applying for two grants to help assess sites By Austin Arceo The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE - Longtime Terre Haute resident Bernard Ridens remembers some of the city sites where he played as a child, and suggested that some might need to be checked for environmental contaminants. The 69-year-old was one of only eight people in the audience as several city officials spoke of the need to investigate brownfield sites in Terre Haute. ...They said during the Wednesday night meeting in City Hall that authorities need to speak with longtime local residents for hints that could potentially lead to forgotten brownfield sites. executive director of the Department of Redevelopment, "and obviously many of us weren't around or were not, at that point in time, cognizant of some of these issues." The city already is working on several areas identified as brownfields, including a 70-acre parcel at the former Terre Haute Coke & Carbon site. Rehabilitation of brownfields cost about $100,000 to $300,000 per acre, Lambert said during the meeting.
