TERRE HAUTE - Longtime Terre Haute resident Bernard Ridens remembers some of
the city sites where he played as a child, and suggested that some might
need to be checked for environmental contaminants. The 69-year-old was one
of only eight people in the audience as several city officials spoke of the
need to investigate brownfield sites in Terre Haute.

...They said during the Wednesday night meeting in City Hall that
authorities need to speak with longtime local residents for hints that could
potentially lead to forgotten brownfield sites.
executive director of the Department of Redevelopment, "and obviously many
of us weren't around or were not, at that point in time, cognizant of some
of these issues."

The city already is working on several areas identified as brownfields,
including a 70-acre parcel at the former Terre Haute Coke & Carbon site.
Rehabilitation of brownfields cost about $100,000 to $300,000 per acre,
