Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Portland (OR) plans to redevelop 25 properties by Portland Harbor Superfund Site |
Brownfields inch closer to redevelopment Portland Business Journal Wednesday, October 3, 2007 by Matthew Kish A national panel of experts announced an aggressive series of recommendations Wednesday for redeveloping 400 acres of high-profile real estate near the Portland Harbor Superfund site. The recommendations, commissioned by several local agencies -- including the Portland Development Commission and city of Portland -- include creating a new public-private entity to buy the 25 properties, which have a conservative value of $87 million. "Maximizing these brownfields is a very high priority of the Portland Development Commission," said Mark Rosenbaum, chair of the commission. Other recommendations included selecting a single developer to spearhead the sale of each property and creating a standard sale agreement for each parcel listing government incentives available to purchasers of brownfields. Such steps would streamline the process and create economies of scale, said the panel. ...The work is considered critical because the metro area needs more than double the amount of industrial land that is available in order to keep pace with current growth forecasts. The land is also near existing infrastructure and would eliminate the need to build costly new roads and railways.
