AVX targeted in lawsuit over contamination Chemical found at potentially unsafe levels on MB land By David Wren Myrtle Beach Sun News November 8, 2007High levels of a potentially dangerous chemical have been found in the groundwater of vacant property along 17th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach, and experts say the contamination could pose a health risk for nearby residents and workers. Horry Land Co., which owns the vacant land, filed a lawsuit in circuit court last month blaming electronics manufacturer AVX Corp. for the contamination. AVX is located across 17th Avenue South from the Horry Land property.The lawsuit says trichloroethylene, a degreaser commonly used by industries and the military, has migrated through groundwater from the AVX site to 21.5 acres owned by Horry Land. Horry Land also says AVX dumped dirt contaminated with trichloroethylene, also known as TCE, on its property without Horry Land's knowledge or permission. AVX, in court filings, denies the allegations and says it is not the source of the contamination. ...
