They can spoil redevelopment as well. Despite speculation from many quarters, concrete plans for NewPorte Landing -- the 150-acre commercial and recreational area planned for north of downtown -- have yet to be laid. Regardless, the lengthy cleanup process of the brownfield, which includes the former Allis-Chalmers industrial complex and the old city landfill, could cause La Porte to miss out on development opportunities, according to Dick Parrette, chairman of the NewPorte Landing Citizens Advisory Board and chair-elect of the La Porte Community Development Corporation. ...
