Brownfield plan to transform Paterson By VIRGIL DICKSON HERALD NEWS (NJ) November 30, 2007 PATERSON -- In December, an environmental engineering firm will begin testing for contamination on eight former industrial sites that the city hopes to transform into housing, retail space, a park and more parking spaces. The city hopes that the eight areas, which surround the Great Falls, will bring in tourism money and rejuvenate the historic district. Mayor Jose "Joey" Torres said this program will help Paterson immensely. And, he added, the whole process is being done quicker than usual because of teamwork. "(It's the chance) to revitalize and rebuild areas that have for years been forgotten," Torres said Monday. "This will bring new life to these neighborhoods." A total of 108 acres will be redeveloped or cleaned, making way for new green space, stores, apartments and town houses, as well as additional parking for the downtown area, said Torres. This is the first in a three-part process, with the second step being cleanup and the third being redevelopment. ...
