Editorial: TC brownfield authority would be accountable

Traverse City Record-Eagle (MI)
December 16, 2007

There has hardly been a more noxious example of aggravation without
representation than Traverse City's brownfield/parking deck debacle of
the past year. The obvious wishes of city residents were ignored and
even ridiculed by unelected members of a county committee, and the
sitting city commission didn't lift a finger.

The easiest and best way to prevent a repeat performance -- and ensure
that residents can make themselves heard -- is for the city to simply
create its own brownfield authority.

Yes, that's another layer of bureaucracy, another round of appointments.
It's a pain. But it's time for the city to get control of the brownfield
process from the ground up so elected officials accountable to city
voters make critical development decisions.
