Editorial: TC brownfield authority would be accountable Traverse City Record-Eagle (MI) December 16, 2007 There has hardly been a more noxious example of aggravation without representation than Traverse City's brownfield/parking deck debacle of the past year. The obvious wishes of city residents were ignored and even ridiculed by unelected members of a county committee, and the sitting city commission didn't lift a finger. The easiest and best way to prevent a repeat performance -- and ensure that residents can make themselves heard -- is for the city to simply create its own brownfield authority. Yes, that's another layer of bureaucracy, another round of appointments. It's a pain. But it's time for the city to get control of the brownfield process from the ground up so elected officials accountable to city voters make critical development decisions. ...
