Planned school site to undergo more tests By KAREN KELLER HERALD NEWS (NJ) December 11, 2007 CLIFTON -- The state is asking for new environmental tests before work can begin to convert a former industrial site into a school, which the district has slated to open in the fall of 2009. The state has started to crack down on school environmental safety after a day care center built on a former thermometer factory site was shut down last year because of dangerously high levels of mercury. According to a new law, schools may be built on potentially hazardous properties only after a review by the Department of Health and Senior Services and the Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP determined recently that the Clifton location needs new tests after a resident alerted the agency to environmental questions about the site, said Larry Hajna, DEP spokesm ...
