Schools site owner to help pay cleanup costs By Tatiana Pina Providence Journal (RI) December 7, 2007 WOONSOCKET - So much transpired yesterday regarding the cost of building two schools on Hamlet Avenue and the cost of cleaning up contamination that by the time Director of Planning and Development Joel Mathews met again last night with the Building Committee, School Committee and City Council much of the information he had previously given out had changed. And this time the news was better. Wednesday Mathews broke the news to the Building Committee that the $74-million school project was increasing to $80 million because of delays in getting the project started and an unforeseen cost of remediation. Contamination from a portion of the ACS property where one of the schools is planned is percolating through the ground and migrating to the nearby Blackstone River. The city would be responsible for remediation costs, which are unknown. ...
