Camden school site criticized as unsafe By MATT KATZ Courier-Post (NJ) December 10, 2007 CAMDEN City activists and state environmentalists want to halt construction of a $37.6 million school being built on a former landfill because they don't believe it is safe for the young, disabled students who will attend there. The Pine Street site contains dangerously high levels of cancer-causing chemicals such as arsenic, and is "patently unsuitable to a school," said Bill Wolfe, state director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility and a former state Department of Environmental Protection staffer. Opponents want construction stopped immediately. They demand a more thorough cleanup and they're asking for medical tests of those who attended or worked at schools on the site from 1977 to 2003. But as walls continue to go up on the new Early Childhood Development Center -- which will serve pre-K and kindergarten students, many of whom are disabled -- officials insist the site is safe. ...
