New checks on Bay Shore toxics BY MARK HARRINGTON Long Island Newsday (NY) November 28, 2007 State health and environmental officials yesterday agreed to conduct more comprehensive monitoring of soil and groundwater as they embark on a plan to treat a massive toxic plume in Bay Shore. At a meeting in Hauppauge, officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health assured Suffolk County officials that they would closely monitor samples as they begin pumping oxygen into the ground to treat a 4,000-foot-long toxic plume. The contamination resulted from decades of coal-tar releases into the ground at the Clinton Avenue site, in a process that made a vaporous gas used for lighting and heating beginning in the 1800s. Suffolk officials, who in the past have expressed concern that the so-called in-situ remediation method could release toxins into the air, said the agreement to do more air and water sampling would help quell their concerns. ...
