Let's Redirect Sprawl Editorial Hartford Courant (CT) February 28, 2008 A policy issue is often helped by being framed in direct language. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell contributed to the cause of smart growth earlier this month when he told developers (as reported in The Philadelphia Bulletin), "What you have to do is redirect sprawl." ... Connecticut has taken steps toward redirecting sprawl. For example, in 2006 Gov. M. Jodi Rell created a central agency, the Office of Brownfield Remediation, to coordinate the state's various remediation programs. But there are still an estimated 1,000 polluted sites to be cleaned up. That should be part of a strong and focused effort to redirect sprawl to the empty and underused sites that pockmark nearly all of our urban areas. The central part of Hartford, for example, has acres of land that is severely underused as surface parking. ...
