Let's Redirect Sprawl

Hartford Courant (CT)
February 28, 2008

A policy issue is often helped by being framed in direct language.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell contributed to the cause of smart growth
earlier this month when he told developers (as reported in The
Philadelphia Bulletin), "What you have to do is redirect sprawl."

Connecticut has taken steps toward redirecting sprawl. For example, in
2006 Gov. M. Jodi Rell created a central agency, the Office of
Brownfield Remediation, to coordinate the state's various remediation
programs. But there are still an estimated 1,000 polluted sites to be
cleaned up.

That should be part of a strong and focused effort to redirect sprawl to
the empty and underused sites that pockmark nearly all of our urban
areas. The central part of Hartford, for example, has acres of land that
is severely underused as surface parking.
