NIAGARA FALLS: Ethanol company seeks state help

Northern Ethanol is hinging its $220 million hopes for a Niagara Falls
facility on whether it's accepted into a state program which trades tax
credits for evidence of environmental cleanup and redevelopment.

"It's a very big key," said Natalie Horrell, director of corporate
relations for the Toronto-based company. "We still hope to break ground
in the first quarter of 2008, but much is contingent on a successful
brownfield application."

Northern Ethanol confirmed in December that it planned to buy a 47th
Street parcel from Praxair, Inc. and turn it into an ethanol producing
facility with more than 100 jobs.

The sale agreement of that land is contingent on acceptance into the
state Brownfield Cleanup Program, administered by the state Department
of Environmental Conservation. Northern Ethanol has applied to that
program and the DEC is currently reviewing the application, according to
DEC spokesperson Megan Gollwitzer.
