Vestal faces long-term TCE cleanup Efforts target properties around plaza By Tom Wilber Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY March 19, 2008 Cleaning pollution affecting dozens of properties in Vestal could take 30 years or more after a $2.2 million investment of state Superfund money for the latest cleanup technology, environmental officials told residents Tuesday night. Trichloroethylene (TCE) pollution exceeding the state's cleanup standards has sunk too deep below a plaza at 1808 Vestal Parkway E. to remove it by excavation, said Thomas Gibbons, a project manager with the state Depart-ment of Environmental Conservation. So officials are recommending technology called In Situ Biodegradation, which involves injecting the ground with pollution-eating agents and using pumps to extract chemicals. The subterranean TCE plume runs northwest from under the former Hidden Valley Electronics site -- now a plaza occupied by American Family Fitness and several other businesses -- to the Twin Orchards neighborhood. Officials tested more than 60 homes and three businesses in the area, and installed systems where they found high TCE concentrations collecting below foundations. The systems -- which vent the fumes from under the properties -- have been installed at 13 homes and the fitness center, Gibbons said. ...
