More time, money for Detroit projects
Book-Cadillac, Bettis to benefit

Detroit development agencies acted Tuesday to boost two high-profile 
projects.

Also Tuesday, the city's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority gave former 
football star Jerome Bettis and his Pittsburgh partner Chuck Betters a 
3-year extension on their deal to build a residential and retail project 
on the Uniroyal site near Belle Isle.

At the Uniroyal site, Bettis and Betters signed a deal with the city in 
2005 to build a multiphase housing and retail project known as Bellview. 
The Uniroyal site is a vacant 40-acre parcel at Jefferson Avenue and the 
MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle.

The Bellview project has been stymied by delays in reaching agreement 
between state environmental authorities and corporate entities on paying 
for an extensive cleanup of the site. Besides the old Uniroyal tire 
factory that did business there, the site was home to a gasification 
plant and other industrial uses for decades.
