Bettis/Betters gets 3-year extension for Uniroyal site cleanup

The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has given Bettis/Betters
Development L.L.C. of Pittsburgh a three-year extension for cleanup on
the old Uniroyal plant site.

The 40-plus acre parcel west of the MacArthur Bridge that leads to Belle
Isle was once the site of a U.S. Rubber Co. tire factory, the Michigan
Stove Co. plant and other heavy industry that left the land contaminated.

A company headed by ex-Pittsburgh Steeler-turned-developer Jerome Bettis
and his partner Charles Betters entered a purchase and land development
agreement with the city in 2005 to build apartments, townhouses, retail
stores and cafes.
