Bettis/Betters gets 3-year extension for Uniroyal site cleanup By Robert Ankeny Crain's Detroit Business March 18, 2008 The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has given Bettis/Betters Development L.L.C. of Pittsburgh a three-year extension for cleanup on the old Uniroyal plant site. The 40-plus acre parcel west of the MacArthur Bridge that leads to Belle Isle was once the site of a U.S. Rubber Co. tire factory, the Michigan Stove Co. plant and other heavy industry that left the land contaminated. A company headed by ex-Pittsburgh Steeler-turned-developer Jerome Bettis and his partner Charles Betters entered a purchase and land development agreement with the city in 2005 to build apartments, townhouses, retail stores and cafes.
