The city of Evansville has filed a complaint in federal court asking a
judge to award damages for cleanup of a Downtown property believed to
contain contamination from an old dry cleaning business at the site.

The former site of Swanson-Nunn Electric Co., at 420 SE Eighth St.,
reportedly is contaminated by hazardous substances including metals,
petroleum, PCBs and chlorinated solvents in the soil and groundwater.

Carolyn Rusk, Brownfield Coordinator for the Department of Metropolitan
Development, said the contamination poses no risk to the buildings
around the site, but it has made it difficult to find an occupant for
the property.
