City aims to take ownership of PCB contaminated homes By CHARIS ANDERSON and JOE COHEN New Bedford Standard-Times June 11, 2008NEW BEDFORD - The city is planning to take ownership of up to six private homes near the Keith Middle School because the properties are so contaminated with pollutants that officials believe they are unsafe for residential use. The assessed values range from $220,000 to $320,000. The city will not use its own funds for the property takings, which will be part of the extended Keith Middle School environmental remediation, overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. There is no known danger to other property owners, and taking the six properties should resolve the issue, Mayor Scott W. Lang said. Mayor Lang said this is another phase in addressing the failure of the previous administration headed by Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr., which did not heed warnings — including those from the EPA — about building the new Keith Middle School on the Hathaway Boulevard site. ...
